Two men have been arrested in Chikwawa District for allegedly being in possession of irrigation pipes suspected to have been stolen from Illovo Sugar Company’s estate. The suspects, identified as Nelson Mwalala and McDonard Kachingwe, were apprehended on Sunday this week at the Thabwa checkpoint while on their way to Blantyre.
According to Chikwawa Police Deputy Spokesperson Chancy Mfune, the suspects were caught while transporting the pipes in a Hijet vehicle. They had attempted to conceal the stolen goods by wrapping the pipes in a woven bamboo basket, claiming they were transporting fish.
“On the day in question, the suspects hid the pipes in a bamboo basket, falsely claiming it contained fish. However, when police officers conducted a search, they discovered ten irrigation pipes marked with the Illovo company’s logo,” said Mfune.
The police have since summoned officials from Illovo to identify the recovered items as investigations into the matter continue. The suspects remain in police custody, and further details will be released once the inquiry is completed.
The case has highlighted ongoing security concerns in the area, particularly surrounding theft from large estates like Illovo, which plays a vital role in the local economy. The police have reassured the public of their commitment to addressing such crimes and maintaining law and order in the district.
