The Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) and the Malawi Network of Older Persons Organizations (MANEPO) have urged stakeholders to adhere to the provisions of the Older Persons Act to promote and protect the rights of elderly citizens across Malawi. This call comes as the country joins the rest of the world in commemorating the International Day of Older Persons, celebrated under the theme “Ageing with Dignity: The Importance of Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons Worldwide.”
In a joint statement signed by MHRC Chairperson Chikondi Chijozi and MANEPO Executive Director Andrew Kavala, the two organizations emphasized the need for greater investment in programs and services that cater to the elderly population. These services include affordable housing, accessible healthcare, and the development of robust social support networks.
“Additionally, we call upon all stakeholders to promote inclusivity by ensuring that older persons are actively involved in decision-making processes and have equal access to opportunities. To combat ageism, we must raise awareness about age-based discrimination and foster respect for all ages,” the statement reads.
Chijozi and Kavala also highlighted the importance of involving older persons in the country’s political processes. They challenged the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to ensure that elderly citizens are not excluded from the electoral activities in the lead-up to next year’s general elections, stressing that their voices are vital in shaping Malawi’s future.
As Malawi continues to tackle the challenges faced by its aging population, the MHRC and MANEPO have called for a collective effort to safeguard the rights, dignity, and well-being of the elderly in all aspects of life.
