DPP demands accountability and integrity in politics amid Kenneth Msonda’s controversial claims

By Burnett Munthali

In the realm of politics, integrity is paramount. The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has long prided itself on the values of honesty and transparency, values the party feels have been attacked in a recent incident. At an MCP rally held at Mgona Ground in Lilongwe, Kenneth Msonda, an influential political figure, made statements that the DPP has swiftly condemned as false and malicious. Now, the DPP is calling for accountability and has demanded an apology from Msonda.

The controversy arose after Msonda claimed that former President Arthur Peter Mutharika, current leader of the DPP, had confided in him about plans to leave Malawi in November and return next July to join the MCP. The DPP has labeled this allegation as “entirely unfounded and baseless.” The party’s leadership argues that such statements are not only false but are also intended to mislead the public and undermine Mutharika’s reputation.

Beyond the allegations against Mutharika, Msonda’s comments took a more personal turn, as he made derogatory remarks aimed at Hon. Shadric Namalomba, the DPP’s Publicity Secretary. Comparing Namalomba to a “servant in his own home,” Msonda’s comments struck a nerve within the DPP, which sees such statements as disrespectful and unprofessional. In a strongly worded press release, the DPP stated that this type of character assassination does not belong in Malawian politics.

In response, the DPP has not only refuted Msonda’s statements but also demanded a public apology. The party insists that Msonda must retract his comments, both in the press and at the next MCP rally. Should he fail to comply, the DPP has signaled its intention to take legal action, marking a serious stance against what it calls “malicious lies.”

The DPP’s press release underscored the party’s commitment to integrity and constructive political discourse. “Our mission is clear,” the DPP stated. “We are here to address the real socio-economic challenges facing Malawi, not to engage in retrogressive politics built on lies and slander.” For the DPP, this incident is not merely about refuting false claims; it is an opportunity to reinforce the principles it stands for.

This demand for an apology is about more than just protecting the DPP’s leadership; it’s a rallying call for respect and accountability in Malawi’s political arena. The DPP’s firm stance against Msonda’s statements reflects its larger mission to create a political culture grounded in truth and respect. As Malawi’s political climate continues to heat up, the DPP’s dedication to integrity may set an important standard for the nation’s future.

Signed,
Shadric Namalomba, MP
Presidential Spokesperson and National Publicity Secretary
