A group of disgruntled Members of Parliament from the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) are reportedly gearing up to table an impeachment motion against President Lazarus Chakwera.
The MPs are furious over what they describe as an orchestrated attempt by Chakwera and his close allies to impose shadow MPs in their constituencies, sidelining sitting lawmakers ahead of the 2025 elections.
The parliamentarians are expected to accuse Chakwera of violating Section 89(3)(a) of the Malawi Constitution during his recent State of the Nation Address (SONA).
According to the Constitution, the President is required to outline the “future policies of the Government at that time” in his address. However, the disgruntled MPs argue that Chakwera’s speech lacked any concrete future policies, making it unconstitutional.
“We heard of no future policies. Perhaps Chakwera knows that his time is over. Legally speaking, a SONA without future policies is unconstitutional,” lamented one MCP MP from Ntchisi who spoke to Cables at Parliament on condition of anonymity.
“We also fear that going to an election with Chakwera as a torchbearer will lead to unbearable losses on our part with all the lies he has told the Country and the National Assembly”, added another MP from Dowa.
The move to impeach the President could signal growing tensions within the ruling party, as frustration mounts over leadership decisions and internal power struggles.
However, it remains to be seen whether the disgruntled MPs will secure enough support to push the motion through Parliament with rumours making round that the MPs have the support of the opposition Democratic Progressive.
