Khumbanyiwa Says Malawi Should Mourn, Not Celebrate Independence Day

UTM Party Member of Parliament for Lalanje Constituency, Given Khumbanyiwa, has stirred public debate after declaring that Malawi has no reason to celebrate Independence Day, citing the nation’s continued struggles with poverty, corruption, and underdevelopment.

Khumbanyiwa said the prevailing economic crisis, rampant corruption, high unemployment, and shortages of essential medicines make it inappropriate for Malawians to celebrate the country’s independence, which was gained on July 6, 1964.

“People should be mourning, not celebrating,” Khumbanyiwa said. “What freedom are we celebrating when our hospitals have no drugs, our youth have no jobs, and our economy is on its knees?”

The outspoken MP further criticized the lack of development in the Lower Shire Valley, particularly in his constituency, where he says people still live without proper roads, reliable food supply, and access to basic services.

“Sixty years after independence, my people in Nsanje still walk long distances on dusty roads to access a clinic or school. That is not freedom. That is suffering,” he added.

Khumbanyiwa said he remains committed to advocating for the rights and development of his constituents and called on voters to choose change in the upcoming presidential elections set for September this year.

He endorsed UTM Party President Dalitso Kabambe as the leader who can bring the transformation Malawi desperately needs.

“If we want a new Malawi, a developed Malawi, let us rally behind Dalitso Kabambe,” he urged.

Malawi marks 60 years of independence this year, but Khumbanyiwa’s remarks reflect growing frustration among citizens who feel the country has little to show for it.
