The capital city of Lilongwe was painted bright yellow today as thousands of United Democratic Front (UDF) supporters gathered at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) to witness their presidential candidate, Atupele Muluzi, officially submit his nomination papers ahead of the highly anticipated 16 September general election.

Clad in the party’s signature yellow regalia, UDF supporters turned out in large numbers, chanting slogans and waving flags in a colorful show of unity and excitement. The energy was electric as Muluzi, accompanied by his running mate Dr. Rex Kalolo, made his way to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) nomination venue.
Receiving the nomination papers, MEC Chairperson Justice Annabel Mtalimanja reaffirmed the Commission’s unwavering commitment to conducting free, fair, and credible elections. She emphasized that MEC remains independent and professional in all its operations.

Speaking during the event, Justice Mtalimanja stressed the importance of peace and unity throughout the election period. “An election is a race—there will be winners and losers,” she said. “When the results are announced, people must be ready to accept the outcome. We also urge all eligible voters to turn out in large numbers and cast their votes in September.”
She further reminded political parties and their supporters that Malawi is one nation, and peaceful coexistence must prevail regardless of political differences.

In his remarks after the nomination, Atupele Muluzi expressed confidence in the electoral process and reiterated his commitment to ushering in a new era of youthful, inclusive leadership focused on development, unity, and economic transformation. “Today marks a new beginning. Malawi needs leadership that listens, leadership that delivers, and leadership that brings people together,” he said.
The MEC Chairperson also appealed to all stakeholders—including political parties, the media, religious groups, and civil society—to support a peaceful and transparent process as the nation prepares for the September polls.
As election day draws closer, momentum continues to build, with MEC intensifying its voter education efforts and logistical preparations. Meanwhile, the UDF’s vibrant presence at BICC today has sent a clear message that the party is ready to contest with renewed vigor and a bold vision for Malawi’s future.
