Botswana President Urges Chakwera to Swiftly Accept Defeat if Voted Out

Lilongwe — Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi has advised Malawi’s President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera to demonstrate statesmanship by swiftly accepting electoral defeat should Malawians decide to vote him out in the forthcoming elections.

President Masisi made the remarks during his official visit to Malawi on Saturday, where he held bilateral talks with President Chakwera before addressing a joint press briefing at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe.

“Democracy thrives when leaders respect the people’s voice. If the outcome of the elections does not favor you, it is wiser to concede with dignity and allow the country to move forward in peace,” Masisi said.

The Botswana leader stressed that political leaders must not allow personal ambitions to overshadow national unity. He warned that prolonged disputes over election results often create instability, which can derail development efforts.

“Malawi is a respected democracy in Africa. The world will be watching how it handles this crucial election. My appeal to all leaders, especially President Chakwera, is to put Malawi first above everything else,” he added.

The statement sparked immediate debate across Malawi’s political spectrum. Opposition parties welcomed Masisi’s remarks, saying they echo the concerns of ordinary Malawians who fear a contested election outcome. However, government insiders described the comments as unnecessary foreign intrusion into domestic affairs.

President Chakwera, who is seeking re-election, did not directly respond to the remarks but assured Malawians that his administration remains committed to credible and peaceful polls.

With less than a month before Malawians head to the ballot box, Masisi’s visit and forthright remarks are expected to resonate strongly as the country navigates a tense campaign season.
