United Transformation Movement (UTM) presidential running mate in the just-ended September 16 General Elections, Dr. Mathews Mtumbuka, has assured Malawians that his party will support the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP)-led government in Parliament on bills that align with the interests of the people.
Speaking on Thursday in Rumphi Boma, where he concluded his whistle-stop rallies to thank voters of Rumphi Central Constituency for their support in the parliamentary race, Dr. Mtumbuka emphasized that UTM remains committed to providing constructive opposition.
“As a party in opposition, we will provide checks and balances whenever the government is failing to improve the lives of ordinary Malawians,” Mtumbuka said.
Commitment to Malawians’ Welfare
Dr. Mtumbuka stated that UTM’s role will not be to oppose for the sake of politics but to ensure that policies and bills in Parliament directly benefit Malawians. He noted that issues of national development, governance, and social welfare should unite both government and opposition for the betterment of the nation.
Political Comeback and Local Development
Despite falling short in his bid for the Rumphi Central parliamentary seat, Dr. Mtumbuka, who garnered over 3,000 votes, expressed optimism about his political future. He promised to continue championing development projects in the constituency while preparing for a stronger comeback in the next elections.
“It is the over 3,000 votes that I got in the last election that has made me not to quit politics but get energized and do more for my people. I am doing this for the love of my people, considering that I come from the same background,” he said.
Looking Ahead
Dr. Mtumbuka reaffirmed his commitment to remain close to the people of Rumphi and push for initiatives that uplift education, infrastructure, and youth empowerment. He also highlighted that UTM’s long-term vision is to build a stronger foundation for inclusive governance and accountability in Malawi.
