Chitipa, Malawi – Commodity prices in Chitipa District have started dropping sharply following the announcement that Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika won the September 16 presidential election.

A market survey conducted in several trading centers across the district revealed that the price of maize, Malawi’s staple food, has significantly decreased. A 50-kilogram bag of maize, which was previously selling at K66,000, is now going for K38,000.President Peter Mutharika Warns Against Corruption in Government Contracts

Local traders such as Rose Kanthonga and Harry Soko confirmed the development, attributing the drop in prices to reduced demand. They explained that major buyers have temporarily suspended purchases of farm produce while waiting for ongoing government discussions on commodity pricing.

In addition to maize price reductions, the Malawi kwacha has also started regaining strength against the Tanzanian shilling, a positive sign for cross-border trade.

This shift in commodity prices and currency performance is being viewed by many as a sign of renewed confidence in the economy under President Peter Mutharika’s leadership.Mutharika Leads in Karonga as MEC Awaits Final Results
