The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has confirmed that it has obtained a warrant of arrest against opposition leader Simplex Chithyola Banda over allegations linked to the controversial Mega Farms Project.

According to the bureau, the warrant was issued by the Lilongwe Chief Resident Magistrate’s Court on May 8, 2026.

ACB spokesperson Jacqueline Ngongonda confirmed the development on Sunday evening, stating that Chithyola Banda is being investigated for alleged abuse of office during his tenure as Minister of Finance.

The anti-graft body alleges that the opposition leader approved K29,469,210,658.09 in extra-budgetary funding for the Mega Farms Project without proper justification, with the funds reportedly benefiting the Greenbelt Authority.

The case is expected to intensify political tensions ahead of Malawi’s electoral season, with analysts already describing the development as one of the most high-profile corruption investigations involving a senior opposition figure in recent years.

Allegations Center on Extra-Budgetary Spending

According to the ACB, investigators believe the approval of the billions of kwacha bypassed established public finance procedures and parliamentary budgetary controls.

Extra-budgetary expenditure refers to government spending conducted outside the approved national budget framework, a practice often criticized by governance experts for undermining transparency and accountability in public financial management.

The Mega Farms Project, which was promoted as a major agricultural transformation initiative, has previously attracted public scrutiny over procurement processes, financing structures, and oversight mechanisms.

The ACB now says Chithyola Banda’s authorization of the funds may have violated laws governing the management and use of public resources.

Political Shockwaves Expected

The development is likely to trigger fierce political debate, particularly because Chithyola Banda currently serves as Leader of Opposition and remains a prominent figure within Malawi’s political landscape.

Critics of the government may interpret the arrest warrant as politically motivated, while supporters of the anti-corruption drive are expected to argue that public officials must be held accountable regardless of political affiliation.

So far, Chithyola Banda has not publicly responded to the allegations or the warrant of arrest.

The ACB has also not yet indicated when the former finance minister is expected to appear before court.

Renewed Focus on Corruption Cases

The latest development comes as Malawi continues to face growing public pressure for stronger accountability in the handling of public funds, especially amid ongoing economic hardships, rising inflation, and concerns over government expenditure.

In recent years, the ACB has intensified investigations targeting both current and former senior public officials accused of financial misconduct, abuse of office, and corruption-related offences.

If arrested and formally charged, Chithyola Banda could face a lengthy legal battle that may significantly affect both his political future and the broader opposition landscape.

The case is expected to dominate national political discourse in the coming days as Malawians await further details from investigators and the courts.
