
First Lady Gertrude Mutharika to Lead Scorchers’ WAFCON Send-Off as K1 Billion Fundraising Drive Begins

Malawi’s First Lady, Madam Gertrude Mutharika, is set to lead the official send-off ceremony for the Malawi National Women’s Football Team, the Scorchers, as the nation rallies behind the squad ahead of its historic debut at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.First Lady A touching moment: Madame Getrude Mutharika embraces young girl during whistle-stop tour
The ceremony, scheduled for Friday at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe, will also feature a fundraising campaign aimed at raising K1 billion to support the team’s preparations and participation in Africa’s premier women’s football tournament.
According to a communication published on the Football Association of Malawi (FAM)’s official Facebook page, the event is expected to bring together government officials, corporate partners, football stakeholders and supporters in a united effort to back the Scorchers on their historic journey.Suleman Chitera Hails Mutharika for Transparent Diplomatic Appointments
Scorchers captain Tabitha Chawinga has welcomed the First Lady’s involvement, describing it as a major morale boost for the players.

“Firstly, let me thank the First Lady for showing interest in supporting the Scorchers. This is a good example of leadership and encouragement to us as players,” said Chawinga.
The captain also appealed to Malawians, the corporate community and other stakeholders to continue supporting the national team throughout the tournament.
“Scorchers cannot be there without you all. That is why we ask you to join us and support us as you have always done,” she added.

The 2026 WAFCON tournament will be staged in Morocco from July 25 to August 16, marking a landmark moment for Malawi as the Scorchers prepare to make their maiden appearance on Africa’s biggest women’s football stage.
