LILONGWE, Malawi — President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has marked his birthday with a significant diplomatic gesture after receiving a personal letter and a special gift from Chinese President Xi Jinping, underscoring the enduring friendship and strategic partnership between Malawi and the People’s Republic of China.

The gift, a beautifully crafted portrait of President Mutharika accompanied by a personal congratulatory letter from President Xi, was presented at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe by the Chinese Ambassador to Malawi on behalf of the Chinese leader.

The occasion highlighted the strong diplomatic ties that have continued to flourish between the two countries through cooperation in infrastructure development, education, healthcare, agriculture, trade and economic growth.

Speaking after receiving the gift, President Mutharika expressed heartfelt appreciation to President Xi for the thoughtful gesture, describing it as a symbol of the close friendship that exists between the people and governments of Malawi and China.

He praised China for its unwavering support to Malawi over the years, saying the partnership has contributed significantly to the country’s development agenda.

“China has remained one of Malawi’s trusted development partners, supporting key sectors that directly improve the lives of our people. This thoughtful gift and personal message further demonstrate the strong bond between our two nations,” President Mutharika said.

The President reaffirmed Malawi’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with China and expanding cooperation in areas that promote economic transformation, investment, industrialisation, education and modern infrastructure.

China has played a major role in financing and constructing several landmark projects in Malawi while also providing scholarships, medical assistance, technical expertise and support for various national development initiatives.
