The four individuals popularly known as the “Phanga welding Boys” must defend themselves in court over allegations of assaulting civil servants during demonstrations at Lilongwe’s Botanic Gardens last year.

The Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court in Lilongwe has ruled that the prosecution presented sufficient evidence to require Mulo Makina, Davie Malamula, Dala Kaduya and Eric Phakamisa to answer the charges.

Presiding magistrate Brecious Kondowe said the case would proceed to the defence stage, giving the accused an opportunity to challenge the allegations and present their witnesses.

The ruling does not amount to a conviction, as the accused still have the opportunity to defend themselves in court.

The case has been adjourned to December 7, when proceedings are expected to continue.
