UN Assures Malawi Of Continued Support

United Nations (UN), says it will continue supporting Malawi in transforming its economy through various interventions.

Speaking after presenting her letters of credence to President Dr Lazarus Chakwera at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe, the new UN Resident Coordinator to Malawi, Rebecca Adda – Dontoh said the UN will make sure it strengthens its relations with the country through various partnerships aimed at addressing the many challenges the country is facing.

She said: “We need to work together with various partners in addressing the many challenges countries are facing including Malawi.”

On the cholera outbreak, Dontoh said the UN family is working with the Ministry of Health to contain the epidemic. She said through UNICEF, the UN will this week provide cholera supplies to Malawi Government.

“Cholera is a serious concern and we engaged various stakeholders to find a path on how the situation can be contained. A plane will be chartered to Malawi specifically carrying cholera supplies,” Addah-Dontoh added.

Before her appointment as United Nations Resident Coordinator, Adda-Dontoh served as a Senior Peace and Development Advisor to United Nations country teams in Bangladesh, Gambia and Malawi. She replaces Maria Jose Torres.
