Police Arrest Human Rights Defenders: Gift Trapence, MacDonald Sembereka
Two seriously vocal human rights defenders and government’s heavy critics, Gift Trapence and Reverend MacDonald Sembereka are in the hands of Police on what the law enforcers describe as “their link to theft related charges”.
Confirming the arrest, National Police Spokesperson, James Kadadzera said, police have arrested the two for misappropriation of donor aid money, with the complaint being lodged by the United Nations (UN) Agency.
He said the police department of Fiscal and Fraud arrested the two on the afternoon of Tuesday and are being held under custody in Lilongwe.
On the same afternoon before effecting the arrest, Police raided the house of Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) Chairperson, Gift Trapence while he was away attending a meeting.
However, while attracting eye brows, the arrest of the two human rights defenders has surprised many people, who are wondering as to why, their arrest comes at the pick of their heavy criticism of government, amid dissatisfaction over poor management of elections by the state appointed Charperson of the electoral body, Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).
The arrested Human Rights Defenders have been on the forefront organising nationwide demonstrations aimed at forcing the MEC Chairperson, Jane Ansah to resign from her position.
