The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has written the Inspector General of Police to institute criminal investigations against 6 errant lawyers pending prosecution.
It follows a submission which the Malawi Law Society-MLS made to the DPP’s office last week over the lawyers, who have not yet been mentioned.
According to the report in mention, there is a 66 % increase in the number of complaints received between February 2021 to March 2022 than those received the same period in 2020/21.
In 2021/22, the MLS received 115 complaints while in 2020/21 it received 49 complaints.
Attorney General Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda petitioned the Chief Justice to ban 12 lawyers from practicing after they were found guilty during disciplinary hearings.
Chakaka Nyirenda indicates that more dishonest lawyers who bring the profession into disrepute will be cornered.
The Malawi Law Society’s disciplinary committee has powers to inquire into the conduct of legal practitioners at the request of the High Court, on complaints made by the members of the public.
