In a bid to combat the growing concerns of road safety, the Malawi Police Service (MPS) has acquired 15 breathalyzers and 10 speed cameras, tools designed to tackle two of the most common causes of road accidents: drunk driving and speeding. This move is part of the government’s continued effort to improve road safety and reduce fatalities caused by reckless driving.

The acquisition of this new equipment comes as part of a broader strategy to address the rising number of road accidents in the country. To ensure the equipment is used effectively, the MPS is receiving specialized training from South African company Truvelo Africa.

The training, which was officially launched in Lilongwe on Thursday, aims to equip police officers from across the nation with the necessary skills to operate the breathalyzers and speed cameras efficiently. Deputy Inspector General of the Malawi Police Service, Happy Mkandawire, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating that the new equipment would significantly contribute to reducing road accidents and ultimately saving lives.

Truvelo Africa’s CEO, Emmanuel Mukosi, also spoke at the launch, highlighting the importance of training the officers to properly utilize the devices. Mukosi confirmed that his team would spend two days in Malawi to ensure that the officers are well-prepared to use the new tools effectively.

The introduction of breathalyzers and speed cameras is expected to enhance road safety enforcement in Malawi, contributing to safer roads for all citizens. With this step forward, the Malawi Police Service aims to take a more proactive approach to preventing road accidents, ensuring that both drivers and pedestrians are better protected.
