The outgoing Managing Director of Illovo Sugar Malawi plc, Lekani Katandula, has expressed pride in the company’s achievements as he transitions to his new role as Chief Financial Officer for UK-based ABF Sugar, the majority shareholder of Illovo Sugar Malawi.
Katandula, who joined the company in 2015 as Financial Director and rose to Managing Director in 2020, reflected on his tenure during a farewell cocktail dinner held in his honor. He acknowledged the efforts of his team and the company’s progress in enhancing operational efficiency, strengthening market presence, and fostering sustainable practices.
“I leave Illovo Sugar Malawi with immense pride in what we have achieved together. The company is on a positive trajectory, and I am confident that it will continue to thrive,” said Katandula.
The company’s Board Chairperson, Jimmy Lipunga, commended Katandula for his visionary leadership, which he said had redefined the company’s strategic direction. Lipunga highlighted Katandula’s role in streamlining operations and enhancing shareholder value as key milestones of his tenure.
“Under Mr. Katandula’s leadership, Illovo Sugar Malawi has set new benchmarks in innovation, sustainability, and operational excellence. His impact will be felt for years to come,” Lipunga said.
Katandula’s move to ABF Sugar is seen as a testament to his expertise and the high regard in which he is held within the global sugar industry. His departure comes at a time when Illovo Sugar Malawi is positioned as a leader in Malawi’s agricultural and manufacturing sectors.
The company has announced plans to ensure a smooth leadership transition, with further details on Katandula’s successor expected soon. As Katandula takes on his new role, stakeholders have expressed confidence that he will continue to excel and contribute to the global sugar industry.
