A Lilongwe based farmer, Peter Chimoto has donated sweet potato vines to help people affected by Tropical Cyclone Freddy (TCF) grow as a measure to recover from food insecurity.
Making the donation on Friday (21st April, 2023) at Bunda, Chimoto handed over 5400 bundles for distribution to affected people as they prepare to rebuild their lives after Freddy washed away their crops.
Chimoto said he is aware that the road to recovery won’t be an easy one looking at the magnitude of damage Freddy left hence any little intervention will make a difference.
“I hope that the donation will help the affected families to have a starter pack as they go back to their communities to start rebuilding,” said Chimoto.
In his remarks, Deputy Director for Disaster Response, Fyawupi Mwafongo expressed gratitude towards Chimoto’s gesture.
Mwafongo said the response is a positive gesture to President Chakwera’s ‘Operation Tigwirane Manja’.
“The donation has come at a right time when DoDMA is in the process of decommissioning camps and facilitating the transition to early recovery of the affected families.
“We are decommissioning camps so that people can go back to their villages and start recovering from Freddy’s impacts.
He said: “Once these potato vines are grown and mature, they will be a source of food as well as income for the affected people. This donation will thus facilitate early recovery for the targeted farming families in Nsanje and Chikwawa” said Mwafongo.
Mwafongo made a call to other well-wishers to emulate from Chimoto’s thoughtful donation.
