United Democratic Front (UDF) President Atupele Muluzi has kickstarted a series of whistle-stop rallies in Makhetha, Blantyre, with party officials calling him the last beacon of hope for a nation grappling with economic hardship and political frustration.
The youthful politician arrived in Makhetha to cheers from hundreds of supporters as he resumed what his party describes as a listening tour ahead of the 2025 general elections.
Dorothy Masinga, UDF’s Southern Region Governor, urged Muluzi to remain steadfast, describing him as a calm and visionary leader. “These people are not looking for noise-makers. They want a president who is not biased, someone who can unite and lead with a clear vision,” she said.
Masinga further stated that Muluzi’s humility and resilience will ultimately earn him national favor. “On September 16, the hand of God will point to Atupele Muluzi,” she declared, suggesting divine endorsement of his leadership ambitions.
UDF Secretary General Genarino Lemani painted a bleak picture of Malawi’s economic status, citing widespread hunger, a crumbling job market, and suffocating business debt. He blamed the current administration for failing to deliver on its promises and argued that Muluzi stands out as the only political figure capable of reversing the nation’s decline.
“Our people’s businesses have collapsed, debts are piling up, and youths are jobless. Malawians are tired and disappointed. Atupele Muluzi is our only remaining hope,” Lemani said.
Muluzi is expected to continue his tour across Southern Region in the coming weeks, meeting grassroots supporters and sharing his vision for a “new economic dawn.”
As Malawi inches closer to another critical election year, Muluzi’s renewed public engagements may signal the beginning of a more aggressive campaign by the UDF to reclaim its influence on the national political stage.
