The Republic of Korea has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Malawi’s development agenda by supporting four key sectors: agricultural innovation and climate-smart farming, health and human resource development, digital skills and youth entrepreneurship, and renewable energy.
Speaking in Lilongwe during events marking 60 years of diplomatic relations between Malawi and Korea, Korean Ambassador to Malawi Park Jae-kyung said the long-standing partnership will continue expanding through ongoing projects and newly introduced initiatives aimed at improving livelihoods across the country.
Focus on Agriculture and Climate-Smart Farming
Ambassador Jae-kyung highlighted Korea’s support toward boosting agricultural productivity, particularly the expansion of rice production. He said this initiative will help tackle Malawi’s recurrent food insecurity challenges by introducing modern, climate-smart agricultural technologies and improving farming value chains.

“Promoting climate-resilient agriculture and increasing rice production will significantly contribute to Malawi’s food security,” he said.
Youth Empowerment and Digital Transformation
Korea is also scaling up programmes targeting youth empowerment, including vocational training initiatives designed to enhance digital skills, promote entrepreneurship, and create employment opportunities for young people.
According to the Ambassador, these initiatives aim to equip Malawi’s youth with practical skills needed to thrive in the global digital economy.
Strengthening Health and Human Capital Development
The Korean government continues to support Malawi’s health sector and human resource development through scholarships, capacity building, and medical cooperation programmes. These efforts, Jae-kyung emphasized, will ensure long-term socio-economic growth.
Malawi Commends Korea’s Support
Minister of Foreign Affairs George Chaponda expressed gratitude to the Republic of Korea for its consistent support in key sectors such as agriculture, health, and human capital development. He pledged the Malawi Government’s commitment to deepening cooperation.
“We appreciate the Republic of Korea for partnering with us on initiatives that transform lives. Malawi will continue strengthening this partnership for the benefit of both nations,” said Chaponda.
Celebrating 60 Years of Diplomatic Relations
The milestone event coincided with Korea’s National Foundation Day, adding symbolic significance to the celebrations. Both countries reaffirmed their dedication to expanding partnerships in development, trade, innovation, and cultural exchange.
