First Lady Gertrude Mutharika has hailed a K40 million donation from the Chinese Chambers of Commerce in Malawi as a critical boost to the Beautify Malawi BEAM Trust, describing the support as timely and strategic.
Speaking at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe on Thursday, Madam Professor Mutharika received the cheque on behalf of the Trust just hours before BEAM unveils its 2026–2030 strategic plan on Friday, February 27, 2026.
She said the donation comes at a pivotal moment as the Trust prepares to roll out an ambitious five-year roadmap aimed at strengthening interventions in health, sanitation and education.
“This support reinforces our resolve as we enter a new strategic phase. It signals strong confidence from our partners in the work BEAM is doing to transform lives,” said Mutharika.
The First Lady stressed that sustainable development requires robust partnerships between charitable institutions and the private sector, noting that BEAM’s next chapter will depend heavily on collaboration and resource mobilisation.
Chairperson of the Chinese Chambers of Commerce in Malawi, Zhou Shanjian, said the chamber remains committed to initiatives that directly uplift communities.
He underscored that health, sanitation and education are foundational to Malawi’s development agenda, adding that the Chinese business community is proud to stand alongside BEAM in advancing these priorities.
“As a responsible business community operating in Malawi, we believe in contributing to the social and economic wellbeing of the country. We are confident that this contribution will support BEAM’s impactful programmes,” Zhou said.
The K40 million injection is expected to strengthen the Trust’s capacity as it embarks on implementing its 2026–2030 strategic framework, which will outline expanded programming and long-term sustainability measures.
With the strategic plan set to be unveiled on Friday, attention now turns to how BEAM will leverage fresh partnerships and funding to scale up its national footprint in the coming five years.
