Mwanamvekha: The Driving Force Behind Malawi’s Economic Stabilisation

By Suleman Chitera

Member of Parliament for Rumphi West, Dadawiza Jona Mkandawire, has delivered a strong vote of confidence in Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Joseph Mathyola Mwanamvekha, describing him as a “katundu muzito” — a highly valuable and dependable asset to Malawi’s economic transformation.

Speaking in Parliament, Mkandawire highlighted what he described as clear and measurable progress in the country’s economic outlook, noting that within a relatively short period, Malawians are beginning to feel relief from the high cost of living. He pointed specifically to the easing of prices of essential commodities such as maize — a critical indicator of economic stability in Malawi.

According to Mkandawire, this progress is not accidental but the result of deliberate, disciplined, and strategic leadership under President Arthur Peter Mutharika. He emphasized that Mwanamvekha’s stewardship of the country’s finances has injected renewed confidence in economic management, restoring a sense of direction and control.

“Mwanamvekha is working tirelessly, day and night, to ensure that the economy is stabilised and that Malawians begin to see real change in their daily lives,” Mkandawire said, adding that the minister’s commitment, professionalism, and results-oriented approach set him apart.

He further described Mwanamvekha as a results-driven technocrat whose efforts are beginning to yield tangible benefits across sectors. From fiscal discipline to price stabilisation, the Finance Minister’s policies are, according to Mkandawire, laying a strong foundation for sustainable growth.

Mkandawire concluded by urging fellow leaders and citizens alike to recognise and support the work being done by Mwanamvekha, stressing that consistent and visionary economic leadership remains key to unlocking Malawi’s full potential.

In his words, “This is the kind of leadership that delivers — a true katundu muzito for the nation.”
