MINISTER MEETS SRWB OVER THE MANGOCHI WATER EXTENSION PROJECT INJUNCTION

The Minister of Water and Sanitation, Abida Sidik Mia, held a meeting with the SRWB on the 18th of March, 2022. The meeting followed the High Court’s order to stop the Board from proceeding with the implementation of the 21 Billion Kwacha water extension project in Mangochi.

Three NGOs challenged the implementation of the water project at Nkhudzi Hill in Mangochi. The NGOs asked the court to order the Board to provide them with all information, documents, drawings, feasibility studies and assessment reports in relation to the project.

In a move to mitigate the situation, Hon. Abida Sidik Mia has swiftly moved and held a meeting with the Water Board to discuss possible solutions to the problem and ensure that all stakeholders are satisfied.

The Minister is optimistic that through mediations with all stakeholders, a solution will be identified so that the implementation of this important project can proceed.

Recently, Malawi Environmental Protection Authority issued had an Environmental Protection Order (EPA) issued a dosure order against the project but later gave the Water Board an approval to proceed with the project in December last year.
