20 Prisoners Officers Houses Ready Month End

By Suleman Chitera Aug2,2022

Some 20 prison officers in Mzuzu will this month-end say good bye to their old or small houses to occupy newly built and spacious houses upon completion of all construction final touches.

Failure to meet the 13th July 2022 deadline is said to be due to change of paint and wardrobe designs by prison authorities.

Hualong Construction Company Site Foreman Gasper Tcherani told Rainbow Online on Tuesday that works will be complete by the 25th August since they are currently at 95 percent completion rate.

“We missed the July deadline because the owners of the houses did not want the designs of the wardrobes and the paint we wanted to use. Now as you can see everything is in order and we should be finishing by the 25th of this month,” explained Tcherani.

Water and electricity have already been connected and painting is in progress.

In December 2020, President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera launched construction of the 10, 000 decent and durable houses in Karonga district for public security officers countrywide in order to alleviate acute shortage of decent accommodation.

The Malawi Defense Force and Malawi Police Service are expected to get 4, 000 modern houses each while the Malawi Prison Service and the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services will have 1, 000 houses each.

About two weeks ago President Chakwera, reiterated his government’s commitment to continue building decent houses for men and women in uniform during the handover of 15 staff houses to the Malawi Police Service at a ceremony held at Malamia Police Mobile Service Camp in Mangochi.
