Malawi has welcomed the establishment of its first-ever Islamic university, IQRA’A University, located in Blantyre at the former Motel Paradise premises. The institution has been funded and supported by the United Kingdom–based Dedza Welfare Trust and Bilaal Trust, who recently toured the upgraded campus facilities.

According to officials from the two organizations, the university has been founded on Islamic values, but it will remain an inclusive learning institution open to both Muslim and non-Muslim students. They emphasized that the goal is to increase access to higher education through scholarship support, ensuring that vulnerable and deserving students are able to pursue tertiary studies regardless of their financial background.

Transformation From College to University

Speaking during the tour, Vice Chancellor Dr. Alfred Matiki said the launch of IQRA’A University marks a historic moment for the country’s higher education sector. The institution was previously operating as the International College of Business Management, but has now transitioned fully into a university recognized by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE).

Dr. Matiki noted that the move is expected to expand academic opportunities and contribute to the development of skilled graduates who can support Malawi’s socio-economic growth. He added that the university is currently offering six accredited programmes across various fields, with plans to introduce additional courses as it expands.

From Handouts to Long-Term Empowerment

The Secretary General of Dedza Welfare Trust said the organization has shifted from providing short-term relief support to investing in sustainable development through education. He highlighted that empowering young people with knowledge and professional skills creates lasting impact and helps communities break cycles of poverty.

“Education is a long-term empowerment tool. By supporting young people to access university education, we are building future leaders and transforming communities,” he said.

A New Era in Inclusive Higher Learning

The establishment of IQRA’A University adds to Malawi’s growing list of tertiary institutions, while also promoting diversity in the education sector. With its commitment to scholarships, moral values, and academic excellence, the university is expected to attract students from across the country and beyond.
