CHIRADZULU — Government officials, traditional leaders and community representatives have gathered at Mlinde Primary School Ground in Chiradzulu District for the elevation ceremony of Kuchombe from its previous traditional leadership status to Sub-Traditional Authority Kuchombe under Traditional Authority Mpunga.

The ceremony is being held today with the elevation expected to formally recognise the changing administrative and traditional leadership needs of communities under Kuchombe.

Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Decentralization, Hon. Joseph Mathyola Mwanamvekha, MP, is attending the ceremony alongside senior government officials, Members of Parliament and traditional leaders.

Minister of Local Government, Hon. Ben Malunga Phiri, is the Guest of Honour and is presiding over the ceremony.

The event has brought together a number of senior government and political figures, including Minister of Energy Hon. Jean Mathanga, MP, Members of Parliament, District Commissioners and other government officials.

Also in attendance is Paramount Chief Kaduya, alongside DPP Director of Youth Hon. Bizzier Kalulu and other dignitaries.

The elevation of Kuchombe comes as part of the country’s system of traditional leadership, under which traditional authorities play an important role in community administration, customary matters, local development mobilisation and the preservation of cultural values.

The creation or elevation of a traditional leadership area can also bring government and traditional administration closer to communities by providing a recognised leadership structure through which local concerns can be channelled.

For communities under Kuchombe, the ceremony marks an important moment in the history of their traditional administration and is expected to strengthen coordination between traditional leadership, local authorities and central government in addressing development priorities.

The presence of the Finance Minister and the Minister of Local Government underscores the connection between traditional leadership and broader government development programmes, particularly at the district and community levels.

Traditional leaders remain important partners in mobilising communities for development initiatives, including education, health, agriculture, infrastructure development and social programmes.

The ceremony at Mlinde Primary School Ground is attracting community members and leaders from across the area, with speeches and proceedings expected to highlight the significance of the elevation and the responsibilities that come with the new status.

The elevation also places greater responsibility on the traditional leadership to work closely with government structures while ensuring that the interests and welfare of people within the newly recognised area remain central to local administration.

The ceremony is continuing in Chiradzulu with government officials, traditional leaders and members of the community taking part in the proceedings.
