Who will be Zambia’s next president?

For weeks, Zambia has witnessed rallies, speeches, campaign promises and political mobilisation as presidential candidates criss-crossed the country seeking the mandate of the people.

Now, the campaign rhetoric gives way to something more powerful: the ballot.

President Hakainde Hichilema is seeking another mandate, asking Zambians to extend his leadership for another five years. His challenger, Brian Mundubile, is offering voters an alternative and asking them to entrust him with the responsibility of leading the country into a new political chapter.

The contest has therefore come down to a clear choice: Hichilema or Mundubile.

But beyond the personalities and political parties, this election is ultimately about Zambia and the citizens who will decide its direction.

The significance of election day cannot be overstated. Political leaders can campaign, persuade and make promises, but once voters enter the polling booth, the power shifts entirely to the people.

Every ballot represents a decision.

For Hichilema, the election is an opportunity to secure a fresh mandate and continue the programme his administration has pursued since taking office. His supporters will be looking to voters to reward the government for its record while giving it more time to deliver on its promises.

For Mundubile, the election presents an opportunity to convince voters that Zambia needs a different approach. His campaign has sought to position him as the alternative for citizens who believe the country should take a new direction.

That makes the election more than a contest between two politicians. It is a referendum on competing visions of Zambia’s future.

The real test, however, will not be the size of the rallies or the noise generated during the campaign. It will be the verdict written on ballot papers across the country.

And that verdict belongs to the voters.

As polling stations open and citizens line up to cast their votes, the most important responsibility is for the electoral process to remain peaceful, credible and transparent. Political differences are inevitable in a democracy, but they should never become a reason for division or violence.

Candidates and their supporters must accept that democracy produces winners and losers.

Whoever wins will inherit the responsibility of governing all Zambians—not only those who voted for them. Whoever loses must respect the democratic process and the will of the people.

That is the true measure of political maturity.

The coming hours will therefore be watched closely, not only in Zambia but across the region. The country has an opportunity to demonstrate once again that political leadership can be determined through the ballot rather than through confrontation.

The question is simple:

Who will Zambians choose to lead them for the next five years?

Hakainde Hichilema wants another mandate.

Brian Mundubile wants a new mandate.

The rallies are ending. The speeches are giving way to ballots. And the politicians are, once again, handing the ultimate power back to the people.
