Network to promote accountability in social protection programmes

The newly launched civil society network, dubbed ‘Civil Society Social Protection Network’, has said it is committed to monitoring social protection programmes implemented by government in a bid to promote accountability in the implementation of the programmes.

Chairperson of the network, Kinnear Mlowoka, told Malawi News Agency that for a longtime civil society organisations in the country have not been taking part in the implementation of social protection programmes.

Mlowoka said that his network is eyeing to help the government in the implementation of social protection programmes by ensuring that the funds made for programmes like social cash transfer, meals programmes in schools as well as public works programmes are properly used.

He also said that as Civil Society Social Protection Network, they want to educate the public about the social protection so that those who are poor should be able to benefit from its programmes.

Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs Director for Poverty Reduction and Social Protection, Patricia Zimpita, hailed Civil Society Social Protection Network for its gesture to support government in the implementation of social protection programme in the country.

Zimpita said as government they expect to see the Network raising more awareness about social protection in general as well as ensuring that there is accountability in the implementation of social protection programmes.
