Minister of Water and Sanitation, Abida Mia, today toured the ongoing Water and Sanitation Project-1 (MWSP-1) and the construction site for a new access road to the Mzedi Dumpsite.

The K1.5 billion kwacha road project is expected to greatly reduce illegal waste dumping along the route, offering a more organized and sustainable solution for waste management in Blantyre.

Minister Mia expressed her satisfaction with the progress made on these critical infrastructure developments.

“We are very impressed with what the Blantyre Water Board is accomplishing. This is an excellent job, and it’s only the beginning. We also have plans for a larger, permanent facility that will be constructed in Chigumula,” she stated.

Blantyre Water Board Chairperson, Joe Ching’ani, assured that the MWSP-1 project is on schedule, with completion expected by January 2025.

The project, funded by the International Development Agency of the World Bank, is part of the Government of Malawi’s initiative to improve water and sanitation services in the Blantyre metropolitan area.
