The Public Affairs Committee (PAC) has expressed deep concern over the Malawi Police Service’s continued silence regarding arrests made following recent violent demonstrations in Lilongwe.
Speaking to Zodiak Broadcasting Station, PAC Publicity Secretary Bishop Gilford Matonga said it is disturbing that two weeks after the chaos, police have yet to issue a statement or release a report on the matter.
“Malawians saw clear videos and images of individuals allegedly involved in the violence. It’s puzzling and unfortunate that law enforcement has remained quiet. This silence raises serious concerns about accountability and justice,” said Bishop Matonga.
He further urged President Lazarus Chakwera to publicly address the issue and inform Malawians of the steps his government is taking in response to the incident.
Meanwhile, Human Rights Consultative Committee (HRCC) Chairperson Robert Nkwezalamba echoed PAC’s concerns, saying the police’s silence is damaging public trust in security institutions.
“This lack of transparency is slowly eroding confidence in the Malawi Police Service. People deserve to know whether any suspects have been apprehended,” Nkwezalamba said.
Fifteen days have passed since the demonstrations, yet police continue to dodge questions from journalists and the public on whether anyone has been arrested in connection to the violence.
As pressure mounts from civil society and religious leaders, the public awaits clarity from authorities on how justice will be served.
