Vice President Enoch Chihana Leads Remembrance Day Ceremony in Mzuzu

Second Vice President Enoch Chihana on Sunday led Malawians in Mzuzu in commemorating Remembrance Day, a solemn occasion held in honour of soldiers who fought and died in the two World Wars.

The ceremony took place at Mzuzu Upper Stadium, where Chihana laid wreaths at the memorial monument as a symbol of national gratitude and remembrance for the fallen heroes.

He was accompanied by Malawi Defence Force Deputy Chief of Defence, Lieutenant General Kondwani Gift Kalino, and the Deputy Inspector General of Police (Administration), representing the Malawi Police Service.

Remembrance Day, also known as Poppy Day or Memorial Day, is observed globally on the second Sunday of November each year.

The day commemorates the bravery and sacrifice of soldiers who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars, as well as those who perished in subsequent peacekeeping missions around the world.

Traditionally, the ceremony includes a moment of silence observed at 11 a.m., marking the exact hour the armistice that ended World War I was signed in 1918.

During the event in Mzuzu, the first and second maroon were sounded to symbolize the echo of heavy artillery that once defined the battlefields of the wars.

The atmosphere was solemn yet dignified as citizens, government officials, and military personnel stood together to pay tribute to the courage and sacrifice of the men and women who served the nation.

Vice President Chihana’s presence underscored the government’s continued recognition of Malawi’s historical role and the enduring importance of honouring those who gave their lives for peace.

The commemoration in Mzuzu formed part of nationwide Remembrance Sunday observances, reflecting a shared moment of reflection and unity across the country.
