Wahera Urges Patience as KIA Atlas Continue to Build

KIA Atlas head coach Kelvin Wahera says he is encouraged by his team’s steady improvement despite the side remaining without a win in the FDH Premier Netball League.

Wahera was speaking on Saturday afternoon after KIA Atlas suffered a 57-35 defeat against Vanessa Sisters at Civo Netball Court in Lilongwe.

Although the result extended KIA Atlas’ losing run, Wahera said he was satisfied with the progress his players are making, insisting that their performance was better than what they showed in their previous match.

“I am impressed with the way the team is improving week in and week out. Today, we played better compared to last week, although there are still areas that need improvement,” Wahera said.

The coach identified consistency in the mid-court and shooting department as two key areas that the team must work on if they are to start turning their performances into positive results.

Wahera explained that KIA Atlas are still in the early stages of building a competitive team, saying they are only about 25 percent into the process.

“We are still building this team. I would say we are only about 25 percent into the process, so there is still a lot of work to do. We just need to keep improving as the season progresses,” he said.

The coach has also called on the team’s supporters and management to remain patient and trust the rebuilding process, expressing confidence that positive results will eventually come.

“We need our supporters and management to trust the process. The results will come. What is important now is that we continue working hard and improving from one game to another,” Wahera added.

The league newcomers will now turn their attention to their remaining four matches of the first round as they look to secure points and build momentum.

KIA Atlas have lost all seven of their opening matches and will face MAFCO Soldiers, Lioness, Civonets and Blue Eagles in their remaining first-round fixtures.

Wahera is hopeful that the team can collect some points from those matches and finish the first round on a positive note.

For the rookies, the focus will now be on converting the improvements they are showing on court into results as they continue their first season in the country’s top-flight netball competition.
