CHILIMA DESCRIBES USA TRIP FRUITFUL

Vice President Dr Saulos Chilima has described his trip to the USA as a success going by the various agendas tabled to improve the economies of Least Developed Countries (LDCs).

Dr Chilima was addressing the Malawi media after he wound up his seven-day trip which took him to New York and Washington DC.

The Vice President said the meetings were very significant since there was a consensus that the three aspects crippling the LDCs’ economies in recent times are the COVID 19 pandemic, climate change and conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Over the past seven days, Vice President Dr Saulos Chilima was in the USA to attend the 2022 ECOSOC Forum on Financing for Development between the 25th and 28th of April.

He also took time to attend several side meetings which will significantly benefit Malawi in terms of development. Dr Chilima told MBC on Friday when the meeting closed that the conversation on LDCs will continue because in July and September this year there will be follow up meetings and the countries will be sharing notes in between.

He said Malawi will continue to fight the problems it is facing as a member of the LDCs.

The Vice President added that Malawi still has an opportunity to do better through agriculture and producing goods it can export to other countries. He said there is a need to plan how the country can ably mitigate the effects of future calamities.

Dr Chilima described his meetings with the USAID and the State Department which both took place in Washington DC as successful.
