Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19 and Cholera led by Minister of Health Khumbize Chiponda is briefing the nation on Tithetse Cholera Campaign. Other ministers present include that of Water and Sanitation, Abida Mia and Justice, Titus Mvalo and other stakeholders who are on a drive to end the cholera outbreak. Chiponda says so far the country has registered a decrease in deaths of cholera patients whose fatality rate is now at 3.2 percent. The Medical Council of Malawi (MCM) has launched the revised Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct for health professionals. Speaking during the launch in Lilongwe, Chairperson for MCM, Professor John Chisi, expressed hope that the new guidelines will curb common professional misconduct by health workers. Meanwhile, Minister of Health, Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda, applauded MCM for intensifying efforts aimed at protecting the public, a development which is in line with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number 3. Established in 1987 by the Act of Parliament, the MCM has both ethical and legal responsibilities.

World Bicycle Relief Country Director, Anthony Kinnaird, says they intend to donate more than 8,000 bicycles in Zomba and Kasungu.

Lives of patients requiring oxygen could be saved at the Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe following the official opening of a gas plant at the facility on Thursday. Health Minister, Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda, who presided over the official opening, indicated the plant has the capacity to fill over 20 cylinders within 24 hours. The gas plant is located in the isolation side of the hospital. Germany Ambassador to Malawi Ralph Timmermann said the gas plant would help in saving lives of not only COVID-19 patients requiring oxygen. He further announced a donation of 12 Million Euros from the Germany government expected to help in the COVID-19 vaccination campaigns across the country.

The consignment comes with support from the World Health Organisation (WHO), United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) and partners. A cholera treatment camp at Ndamera Health Centre in Nsanje The Ministry of Health is planning to conduct a cholera vaccination campaign over the next few weeks. The campaign will target 1.9 million adults and children from one year old upwards who are living in flood-affected and cholera-prone districts, especially Nsanje, Chikwawa and Machinga. The targeted people will receive two doses two weeks apart. This follows a cholera outbreak detected in Malawi last month. Chiponda, in February this year, emerged winner of a fully paid one week trip to Dubai worth K5 million in the promotion. She leaves the country through Kamuzu International Airport accompanied by a Ntcheu-based Health Surveillance Assistant (HSA), Esther Nyozani. Speaking at the airport Chiponda said, for her prize she was given a chance to choose anyone to accompany her on the trip. She therefore decided to go with the HSA whom she said is among health workers doing great job of helping people in the country. World Health Organization (WHO) has provided the Malawi Governemnt with 1, 947, 695 doses of oral cholera vaccine to the Malawi Government. The vaccine will be administered to eight districts of Nsanje, Chikwawa, Mulanje, Phalombe, Blantyre, Machinga, Balaka and Mangochi. Malawi's Ministry of Health has also received some critical tools in the fight against the disease like diagnostic aids, laboratory supplies, essential medicines and supplies. A few days before the 2021-22 financial year comes to an end, Minister of Health Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda has confirmed that implementation of Health Facilities Project has failed to take off as planned. The initiative targeted to rehabilitate public health facilities, thereby helping the Central Government meet its goal of improving access to healthcare services. District councils were earmarked as implementers of the project.
