The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (Dodma) has issued a warning regarding the impending landfall of Cyclone Chido, which is expected to hit near Nacala, Mozambique, on Sunday, December 15, 2024. Nacala lies approximately 500 kilometers from Mulanje, in southern Malawi.
According to Dodma, Cyclone Chido has intensified into a severe tropical cyclone and is currently moving westward at a speed of 19 kilometers per hour over the Indian Ocean.
Dodma Commissioner Charles Kalemba released a statement indicating a 60 percent chance that the cyclone’s remnants could reach Malawi, bringing heavy rainfall and potential flooding to various parts of the country from December 15 or 16, 2024.
Kalemba has urged people in flood-prone areas to take immediate action to ensure their safety. “There is an urgent need for residents in vulnerable areas to move to safer locations in anticipation of the cyclone’s arrival,” the statement reads.
To minimize the impact of the cyclone, Dodma has outlined several precautionary measures for the public to follow:
1) Move to safer and higher areas immediately.
2) Stay informed by following weather updates through various communication channels and platforms.
3) Avoid crossing flooded rivers or walking through running water.
4) Stay clear of power lines and electrical wires, and report any fallen power lines to authorities.
5) Do not risk personal safety by attempting to save property in hazardous conditions.
6) Store essential items in safe, higher locations.
7) If possible, provide first aid treatment to the injured and those in shock, and call for medical assistance.
Cyclone Chido’s potential impact brings memories of the devastation caused by Cyclone Freddy earlier this year, which left widespread damage and loss of life in its wake. Dodma urges the public to remain vigilant and prepared for the upcoming storm to minimize risks and ensure safety during this potentially hazardous period.
